We are entering some very exciting times with Stock sports. Ice Stocks is now a sport “recognised” by the Australian Olympic Committee and it’s possible that Ice Stocks will be part of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy! Extra exciting news is that we have four Canberra players that have been selected onto the Australian squad to compete in the 2020 World Championships in Regan Germany!
Canberra Cup – April 2019
With the demolition of the Serbian Club and after the unexpected demolition of the back wall of our bans, we were all very concerned about our ability to host the 2019 Canberra Cup. Thankfully, through some timely intervention from the Austrian Club Committee, we were fortunate enough to ready the bahns alongside a construction zone and host, as always, a very successful weekend. A huge thankyou to Bozena, Kevin, Loyzek, and Kylie for helping out with cooking and serving all the delicious food on the day! It was also fantastic to see some of our retired and founding club members Anita Leins, Helmut Paier, Walter Schweiger and Werner Binder come along and support us on the day. The results were Melbourne 1 first, Melbourne 2 second and Canberra 1 in third place.
Gold Coast Oceanic Target Competition
Our Canberra players returned excellent results at the National Target championships with Peter Menzel (318 pts) getting second place in the Men’s and Kim Pollock (255 pts) getting first place, Kim McKay (255 pts) getting second and Chrysanthe Psychogios (227 pts) getting third in the Women’s.
In the team event, Melbourne 1 (16:0) was the winner, Blacktown Workers 1 (14:2) second and Melbourne 2 (10:6) third. Our Canberra team finished in fifth place (13:15) out of the eight teams that attended.
Hans Menzel Memorial Trophy – ACT/NSW Cross-border Competitions
In what has become somewhat of a tradition, we have held two cross-border competitions so far this year. One in March (ahead of the Canberra Cup), where members from the Blacktown Workers travelled to Canberra, the second in September where we travelled up to Doonside (ahead of the Oceania team competition). On both occasions, Blacktown Workers were the victors.
Sydney Oceanic Team Competition – September 2019
Our third national championship event of the year was recently held in Doonside (Sydney), where the Canberra Club entered one team to compete in the 2019 Oceania Team Competition. After a slow start, Canberra came home strong – and took out fourth place, only just missing out on a medal. Congratulations lations to Blacktown Workers 1 (26:2) for taking the title of Team Champions, and to Melbourne 1 (22:6) and Melbourne 2 (16:12) for their second and third places respectively.
China – 13–21 October 2019
In even more exciting Ice Stocks news, three players from Canberra Stock Sport club have been selected by the International Federation, to join an Australian contingent travelling to China to showcase Ice Stocks!! Peter Menzel, Chrysanthe Psychogios and Kim McKay have been selected, along with five other Aussies, will be travelling to Harbin China, to demonstrate and coach the locals in Ice Stocks, and to compete in the inaugural China Cup. “Hâo yùn” (“Good luck”) to all the players going!
Melbourne Cup and Oceanic Distance Competition
The Oceanic Men’s and Women’s Distance championship and Melbourne Cup event will be held in Heidelberg on 16 – 17 November.
Finally, the Canberra Club would like to welcome our newest member, Paul Dritsas. Welcome on board Paul! With biceps as big as yours, you shouldn’t have any problems challenging the next distance champions.
